Why Packing Properly Saves You Money

Why Packing Properly Saves You Money

Packing feels like the least important part of moving — until something breaks, a van has to make two trips because boxes were packed inefficiently, or fragile items arrive in pieces. The way you pack directly affects both the cost and the outcome of your move, and a small amount of extra care up front prevents most of the expensive problems.

Breakages Cost More Than You Think

Replacing a damaged item isn't just the cost of the item itself — it's the time lost dealing with insurance claims, sourcing a replacement, and the frustration of losing something with sentimental value that can't be replaced at all. Most breakages happen because of poor padding, overloaded boxes, or fragile items packed alongside heavy ones, all of which are avoidable with the right technique.

Use the Right Box for the Right Item

Heavy items like books belong in small, sturdy boxes — a large box full of books becomes too heavy to lift safely and often fails at the bottom. Lighter items like bedding and clothing can go in larger boxes since weight isn't the limiting factor. Fragile items need dedicated boxes with proper padding, never mixed in with heavier general items that could crush them during transit.

Wrap Fragile Items Individually

Every fragile item — glassware, ornaments, electronics, picture frames — should be wrapped individually before going into a box, with padding between each item and the box walls. Old towels, clothing, and newspaper all work as padding if you don't want to buy bubble wrap specifically. Never leave empty space in a box with fragile contents; movement during transit is what causes breakages, not the moving itself.

Label Everything Clearly

A box labelled only "kitchen" is far less useful than one labelled "kitchen — plates and bowls, fragile." Clear labelling means the moving team can prioritise correctly, handle fragile boxes with appropriate care, and unload directly into the right room, saving significant time on both ends of the move.

Maximise Van Space Without Overloading It

Efficient packing means more of your belongings fit in a single trip, which directly reduces cost if you're paying by time or by number of trips. Flat, hard items like mirrors and picture frames should be packed vertically along van walls. Boxes should be uniform in size where possible, as they stack more efficiently than mismatched shapes.

Disassemble Furniture in Advance

Beds, wardrobes, and large tables take up far more space assembled than disassembled, and often won't fit through doorways or staircases in one piece. Taking furniture apart in advance — with screws and fittings bagged and labelled — saves time on moving day and prevents damage to doorframes and the furniture itself.

When to Let the Professionals Pack

If time is tight or you're moving fragile or high-value items, professional packing assistance removes the risk entirely. A team that packs vans for a living knows exactly how to protect items and maximise space in ways that aren't obvious from the outside.
